Purpose Pressure

Inspirational posts on social media, videos on youtube, self-help books in the bookstore and sponsored adverts, all telling us that we have to live a life of purpose, to find our higher calling and that we must find it quick, because time is not on our side.

We lean in and listen, because, let’s face it, no one wants to feel left behind. We start to take stock of what we have achieved so far in our basic lives.

We start to think long and hard about the things we are good at, the things that comes to us naturally…

That one thing – Our gold ticket!

We set lofty unrealistic goals for ourselves, because we read or have heard somewhere, this is what successful people do! Without knowing it, we start to put ourselves under what I like to call ‘purpose pressure,’ mentally, physically and emotionally.

Anxiety, stress, illness, kick in… all because we have unconsciously allowed complete strangers, who have no idea what it feels like to be us, describe what living a life of purpose should look like on us.

A lot of us are living life desperately seeking out our ‘one single purpose,’ forgetting about the present and always living in the future.

Failing to understand that purpose reveals itself in us, in the here and now, just as we are living.

Failing to realise that in the course of our lives, we will fulfil several purposes…that in living our lives, purpose happens to us.

How?

In being in the present. In being a better version of ourselves everyday!

In choosing to give the best of ourselves to the things present in our lives everyday. That job, our family, our friends.

Everything else is in the past or future

In consciously choosing to put our best foot forward in whatever it is we find to do in this world, again to be better than we were yesterday.

At the end of our journey, if we got to see a playback of our lives, what would you want to see in it?

Close your eyes for a second and think…

Greatness and success are subjective, they mean different things to different people.

In the course of your life, your more than one purpose will reveal itself to you…

Take that purpose pressure off, relax…

What do you find to do in your hands right now?

Go on then, put your absolute best in it.

You are fulfilling purpose already!

You just spewed my whole heart on this subject, I once pursued purpose and now I know that the human life is too multi-faceted to have ONE purpose. You articulate one purpose and it morphs into another, hence, we have to be flexible and enjoy the process. Purpose pressure is all around us, sometimes very subtle, staying grounded in the present is where all my effort lies and its a daily struggle.

It is so comforting to know that we are not alone in our struggles, life is an adventure, and every day we get to see has its own purpose.
      Thank you for sharing❤️
